They are high crime like all low income area's of major cities. Different than South East San Diego in that it's more congested and the crime bleeds into decent area's. Also no gangs like SD, no Bloods & Crips etc. Turfs aka Housing Projects and drug dealers are who kill each other. Most killings are retaliation killings in those area's. I wouldn't worry about it.

SF reminds me of NY in the way victims get robbed here. You're more likely to get stuck up at gun point randomly downtown. I was robbed at gunpoint walking to my car one night after a club.

The areas to watch out for are Bayview/Hunter's Point, Visitacion Valley, and Oceanview. Generally, if you see new development that's not high-rises, that's going to be a lousy area.

While gangs may not be as noticeable in SF as they are in SD they're are still plenty of gang members in SF.

Remember this story: Judge orders Ramos tried on 3 murder counts
or this one recently: Gang members shot men for wearing red, cops say

But the above stories tend to be random incidents not too common, like most crime it's criminals killing each other.

That's true, I forgot about the Latino gangs, MS 13, XIV, X3. They tend to be more in the Mission.
