Thinking of Moving from Ireland to Peninsula next year are there many H1B Visa Jobs in Software tesing?
Myself and my husband (no kids yet) are planning on moving from Ireland to Bay Area (prob Burlingame). We know the area well and have family there. I have a green card so things should be fine from my side but my Husband is a software tester and will be needing to get a job that sponsors him a visa. Does anyone know if these are hard to come by? Are we mad???? Any and all advice welcome

H1B cap was not hit this year for the first time in many years. Many companies are laying off. Most companies are avoiding H1-B because it looks bad politically to hire foreigners at a time when so many Americans are out of work. But it is not impossible, especially if your husband has a lot of degrees or some specific area of knowledge that is uncommon. It is a lot easier if you are already here.

Jobs here in California are about as plentiful as they are in Ireland right now...AND you probably already know that the Bay Area is about as dear as Dublin... I'll let you come to your own conclusions on this one. I personally wouldn't risk it now with the state of things here.

Well, bring lots of money with you - a very expensive area (tho wonderful) to live in. Be willing to work at something else until your chosen profession opens up. But you already know that. It's good you already have a family here. Good luck to you both.

At larger firms most of those jobs got moved to China and India (or to Eire! - LOL!)
There may still be a few at start ups.
Maybe try Craig's List.

Stay in Ireland. You're going to be the only white person here. Please do your research on demograhics.
See "www.greatschools.net" to see where your future kids will attend school. The Bay Area is filled with Asians, Indians, Mexicans, Blacks, etc.. You have no idea what it's like here. I suggest spending at least 3 weeks here before you make a move of this magnitude. White People are moving out of the Bay Area in massive numbers. It's basically a 3rd World Country at this point. If you're from Ireland I assume you're somewhat socially conservative, so welcome to the Gay Bay. Gays run the entire Bay Area, especially with the mayor of San Francisco "Any twosome Newsome." The State is obsessed with having a "Harvey Milk" Gay Day declared (He was a former City supervisor who liked to have sex with under aged boys.). He happened to be shot along with the mayor at the time. If you're Catholic, DO NOT MOVE HERE!!!

I don't think you know what the he** you're talking about. You're ridiculously misinformed about the Irish and everything about them.

Well OP, I'm pretty sure you can already tell you should completely ignore the nonsense in this post. The only thing about it I think should actually deter you is that its evidence there are crazy people that live here.

Uh, Clongirl, I am Irish !! My grandparents on my father's side were from Dublin Ireland. So, it looks like you don't know what the heck you're talking about. The facts are the facts. Any area that's predominately white in the Bay Area will have sky high property values (such as the Lamorinda area). Gee, why don't we see a large influx of immigration from Europe nowadays? We now see immigration from Mexico, South America, Asia, India, etc. NO ONE is coming from ITALY, FRANCE, GERMANY, IRELAND, etc. The facts speak for themselves. While we get the influx from the "turd" world, there is major "white flight" to other states and small enclaves within this state. Check out the demographic trends. I'll back up my rhetoric with statistical undisputed facts, rather than your liberal drivel.

Uh, no Frank, I'm sorry to inform you that are an American. I think you've probably seen "The Quiet Man" or "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" one too many times. As for the immigration thing--well, my husband emigrated during the nineties like many of his friends when their economy was horrible. The Celtic Tiger turned that around and many Irish began returning home (my family included) since jobs, especially in the high tech field were abundant. Why not read through the several posts already of Irish looking to emigrate now (of course, the times have changed dramatically and the US economy is doing just as poorly as the European economy).
