Fremont GM/Toyota plant to close
WASHINGTON - Toyota is pulling out of a California factory joint venture it had previously run with General Motors — the first time the Japanese automaker is closing a major auto assembly plant ever.
Toyota Motor Corp. said Friday it will stop production at its Fremont, California-based New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., or NUMMI, in March 2010, and will move production to its other plants in the U.S., Canada and Japan.

Sad Day indeed for the Bay Area and Northern CA...
5000 of my friends and neighbors work at the plant and thousands more in support positions... everything from the steel that comes in from Pittsburg CA to the rail lines and local shops and restaurants...
The only new car my family every bought was a Fremont built Toyota Corolla... Toyota was even nice enough to invite us to come to the plant to see OUR CAR being built!!!
8 years and not a single problem!!!!
The plant has a very good record and dedicated people... CA is a high cost area to do business and they had problems maintaining reliable electric service during the energy crisis and don't forget that plans to expand the facility were derailed by a family of burrowing owls in the vacant land earmarked for expansion.
I have several friends that work there and they are dedicated... giving their personal time to make model year changeovers and active in the community...
The last major auto plant west of the Mississippi will be missed.
When Ford closed it's Fremont/Milpitas plant... it was turned into a shopping mall

Yep, the rumor of many years has finally come true. We've got until the end of March '10 - so they say. They it will be time for me to look for a job or move out of the area - along with many thousands of others.
Thanks for remembering us!

That's been the way for the last 20 years hasn't it? Lose a good job that actually pays a decent living and replace it with minimum wage work.
It continues to be a conversion of frightening consequence.

What will that "state" do NOW?
........Honestly, just sell the state to Communist China.....it still must be worth....something...
....sheesh...they'd do a better job of running it anyhow.....
Lenin was right...."give them enough rope and they'll hang themselves.."........

Fremont, not Freemont (I think the OP may be able to correct the thread title).
Yet another place name derived from John. C. Fremont.

It was probably the outrageous taxes that drove Nummi out. It should come as no surprise that virtually all the auto factories of Japanese companies are in the business friendly south. Ironically this is probably something Californians more or less did to themselves by voting for the tax gangsters that represent them now. This is what happens when you "fight the man", the man simply picks up his business and leaves for somewhere more profitable. I hope everyone enjoys the new minimum wage Mc Jobs that will be at the strip mall that is sure to replace the plant.
