What is the cost of fish/sea food in San Francisco?
What is the cost of fresh/frozen fish and shell fish? Is it the same as in Iowa city Iowa?

most frozen fish comes from other countries so I am guessing it is similar but fresh might be a little less. I am appalled at the cost of fish today. We are told to eat healthy but at $8.00 to $18.00 a lbs how can we afford it?
At least in Ca some of the fish is fresh, not frozen like and get and we get.

Well, this is a very strange question but...
Here's an approximation of what I'm seeing for seafood at Costco..
Fresh trout..2.99lb
Halibut..11.00 lb
Scallops..8.00-11 lb
Tilapia...2.99 lb
fresh shrimp...10-12 lb
Dungeness crab (not in season) 6.00 lb off season, in season (yum) 3.00lb
Salmon..varies widely depending on whether it's farm raised or wild..4-8$lb
I've never been to Iowa, so I can't comment on the difference in prices. I'm guessing that you will find more fresh seafood from the West Coast than what you're used to! Oh, I pay around 12 dollars for a 2lb bag of large frozen shrimp (from Thailand)

We pay about the same for large shrimp, it does sound like your prices are a heck of a lot better overall than here. Tilapia is closer to $5.00, trout the same. And crab, wow: Salmon can range from $5.00 to about $10.00. Halibut is close to what you are quoting. \

H&N Foods in SF is the best for frozen seafood I know of anywhere. They have stuff from all over the world. I go there for NZ Mussels, Clams, Octopus, Crab, Lobster etc. Their prices are very reasonable-heck I take food from there to Hawaii. LOL

Can someone in Iowa City and someone in San Francisco please run to your nearest Safeway and find a 12-ounce jar of pickled herring, mark down the price, come back home, and report?
I have to know this.

Its been a while. But the last time I bought pickled herring. It was like $2.50 per pound. We do not have safeway stores in IC. But we do have fairway stores. It sounds like the prices in Frisco are about the same. I was hoping it would be less so close to the sea. Given I am moving to san francisco next year.
Related question. How is the fishing along the shore of the bay?

No, anywhere I've ever lived (numerous places here and in Europe), fish is universally expensive.
And I wouldn't be eating anything that came out of the bay.
