...and, kids do ride their bikes in Atlanta with no problem. Don't remember seeing too many kids riding their bikes up and down SF or Oakland. In the burbs is where you will find more of a community presence whether here or in GA. But in some burbs in GA kids go from one house to the next without a problem and neighbors leave their doors open.
Finally, the night life and restaurants are better in Atlanta. The 2AM rule for alcohol has really hurt the bay area night life IMO.

Are you kidding me?!?! Vallejo is one of the WORST places in the Bay Area overall and especially for raising a family. Have you ever spent much time there or know anyone that lives there? The place is a crime ridden, low class dump full of sketchy people.

People let their kids ride their bikes around Vallejo

Not people that care about their kids safety. The best things my parents ever did for me and my brother was LEAVE Vallejo when we were young. Vallejo is NOT a good place to raise a family.
I prefer the Bay Area over Atlanta but if I was stuck in Vallejo I'm not too sure.

night life, maybe, the 2am is pretty crappy... but a different scene... restaurants, sorry can not concede that, bay area competes with nyc/paris/barcelona for restaurant cred and foodies while ATL gets hot in the britches for fogo de chao.

Using City-data's data. Note that I said California, not bay area. If you compare against the whole state including places like El Centro, Fresno, etc.. it still comes out better than average. Wouldn't be my first choice for bay area either but the OP's made his position clear enough for me.
Atlanta's top 3 crime ranking on these links:
100 most dangerous cities in the USA America states 10 20 50
City Crime Rankings by Population Group (Even though google pulled this one up first it's not the most recent).
I think the popular consensus among media is that most recently Atlanta's dropped on most lists to the bottom of the top 10; still not an enviable place to be.

Grapico, NY's food is wonderful no doubt. Vegas food amazing. SF food is really lacking IMO. My husband was so amazed about the food quality in Atlanta. It is really amazing. SF is known for its beauty but when they talk about the food they must be talking about something that happened years ago. The food here is a big disappointment. LA has WAY better food than the bay area.
Zoidberg, why would you post listings that aren't credible and have no time frame and or sources from where this information is being pulled? The sources I pulled Atlanta does not make up the top 10 at all and the sources also reference and are in line with the crime data from the FBI. Anyways, just like the bay Atlanta's crime has been going down and is not on the top 10 list. Have you even been there recently?

I have been to Atlanta a lot for work lately, I am actually quite impressed with Atlanta, it is said to have really improved since hosting the Olympics in 96. The weather is not as nice, and it is generally more conservative than the Bay, but like any large metro it has enclaves to fulfill most desires.
The area near Piedmont Park is gorgeous, I walk from my hotel, take a train to the underground and then a free shuttle to go watch the Braves play. My wife enjoys the shopping, people are very friendly and from diverse backgrounds.
I like Atlanta a lot and believe the closest mountain range is 2hours away, many good colleges nearby too.

Hey Sav858 have you been to Vallejo recently? It may have changed or is in the process of changing, I know many middle class "nice" families are moving there because housing is so cheap. Many artists from what I hear are going there as well.
I have driven through it myself, nothing too great, kind of like a even more suburban Fremont in my opinion, although the schools are no-where near as good.
Where else in the bay can you get this?

El Centro and Fresno are NOT "average" for Ca, especially El Centro. Sure in comparison to even crappier cities Vallejo might look good but it is definitely NOT "above average" for Ca. What "averages" are you actually comparing?
That first link is from 1998, not a valid list at all. The 2nd one I can't even tell what year is from.
Two of my relatives were murdered in Vallejo, none in Atlanta. So whatever the crime stats show, Vallejo will always be at the bottom in my mind.

Not since last Thanksgiving. Both of my parents and all of their siblings were born and raised in the Bay Area. I've know A LOT of people that grew up there, many have moved from there but some still live there.
It's a decent sized city so there are some nicer neighborhoods and it's not all horrible. Actually some of it can look pretty nice and you don't feel like you're in Vallejo. But the schools are terrible and there are a lot of crappy parts and shady people in that town. You can do definitely do worse in the Bay Area but also a lot better.
I know I come down hard on Vallejo but it's pretty much the only place I really dislike a lot. I've just seen and experianced some crappy stuff b/c of that city and would never recommend raising a family there. You can raise a family w/o much problems there but I just feel there are better environments than Vallejo for that.

Definitely, but at that price? 172k for a 4/2 1800 sq ft? That's hard to find in Sacramento, nonetheless the Bay.
