I'm actually surprised NYC doesn't get mentioned, they are getting a lot more VC money these days, and a lot of companies are opening satellite offices out there.

I think NYC has Silicon Valley beat in terms of costs though. Try to rent office space out there for less than $60/sqft/year, it is tough, here in San Jose $25/sqft/year is not so hard, but most companies want to be in Palo Alto or Mountain View "where the action is" and that is closer to $50/sqft/year.
Also, there are thousands of foundry and high-tech jobs in the NY Capitol region. Globalfoundries has built one of the biggest fabs in the world there and has plans to build another right next to it.

Yeah, Upstate New York...the salaries would have to be 2X what they are in the bay area to warrant moving there.

The cost of living is much lower in Albany, and is more affordable with the incomes in the area. Lower unemployment as well.

Over 40% of VC money is spent in the Bay Area, and that percentage increased from 2012 to 2013, so it doesn't appear they are moving anywhere.

Why? I'd consider it even with a pay cut. Vastly lower COL means you are still likely to come out ahead financially. Real seasons are just an added bonus (to me).

Looking on Redfin, 395k for a 2br/1.5 bath 'townhouse' is the best-case scenario... a 5br isn't gonna happen for anywhere near $500k in Scotts Valley or anywhere else in that area, including two formerly 'sketchy' areas in nearby Felton of Lompico and Zayante... Scotts Valley has OK schools, nothing special and WAY overcrowded/underfunded much like almost every other school district outside of Silicon Valley...

Also Route 17 is one of the most dangerous time-sucking meat-grinders of a commute in NorCal... been there, done that. Scotts valley is the home of bad Chinese restaurants and Seagate's rotting Santa Cruz County corpse.

The location's nice if you don't mind balancing coastal access with homi/suicidal commuting over 17... seriously, as bad as people say it is, it's *worse*. Only way I'd do SV is telecommuting with occasional forays over the hill in NON-rush-hour traffic... though doing a startup indicates you'll probably be doing mostly 'Face Time' and not Skype Time, though, eh?

For Scotts Valley residents, 17 south into and out of SC is anathema to staying alive... they take any of the three other non-17 routes into and out of the coastal areas. But that still leaves the mediocre schools and lack of real shopping options. The only dwellings that even approach 5 brs on your budget aren't gonna be in or around Scotts Valley, Boulder Creek/Felton/Bonny Doon. I frankly don't know where in the overall area you are wanting to move that would have what you want. Perhaps Derek or someone else would... good luck!

Someone is touchy. I would try to teach him logic and reasoning, but it would be useless.

The cost of silicon valley only doesnt matter for huge companies and billionaires. Even for someone who made $10 million dollars, the cost is prohibitive. Suppose you keep $5 million for a nest egg. Then, you have $5 million to spend on startups. You could blow it all on one idea in silicon valley. Or move to a cheaper city and have 2 chances or do one big idea for half the cost.

Probably no where lol. Most of these executives are millionaires and can easily afford the bay area. Why would they move?
