LA to Cupertino commute
Hi, just got my dream job, but it'sin Cupertino, and I am in LA. We are esteablished here, prefer not to relocate, anyone commuting from LA to San Jose? Based on cost of living, relo costs, etc...I am thinking the commute ultimately would be a cost savings endeavor. Comments, Suggestions? Thanks much, and Happy 4th!

Commute??? You've got to be kidding me!! It's about a 6 - 7 hour car trip between LA and Cupertino - one way. Plan B is to fly but that can get expensive. Get an apartment in Cupertino and "commute" on the weekends.

Yes. The cost to commute is $120/day, and based on an estimated 245 commute days, minus the frequent flier points and discounts, the average to commute would be $25-26K/yr. ($19K if I count the relo money from the new company) I live 10 minutes from the Burbank Airport, and the Cupertino office is ten minutes from San Jose Airport. I own my home here, with over $300K in equity. To move and buy a house would cost at least $300K more and more than likely $500K. The mortgage would be at least $600 more each month, probably more like $1000. The income change is significant, more than $40K over my current job.
The flight is typically 1 hour, total of two. I presently commute over an hour one way. Estimated yearly fuel cost is $5000. Take that cost from the $19K to commute to San Jose, and the cost is approx. $12K/year. Just the difference in mortages is equal to that number, plus, the company where I am going has me traveling out of country for 50% of the time.
These are just rough numbers, and it sounds simplistic, but overall it seems doable. Or?

The headaches will get old real quick in this scenario. My boss lives in Orange County and works in San Jose. He rents a room in a house for like $600 a month, and stays here M-Thursday. Then goes home for the weekend and does it all over.

I don't want to be away from my family that much, as it is, I have to travel 2 weeks of every month.

Also, think about the impact that all that flying over such a long span of time might have on the environment- just a another perspective...

I have several motorcycles, and I can pick up a beater car to leave on campus. I can't believe that there is no one making that commute, don't tell me I am having an original thought?!

Negotiate a day or two to be able to work from home. That should save you some travel, time and money.
