Default Cities/Neighbourhoods for a new house

Hi,
We are a young couple in late 20s with no kids and we started house hunting 2 months ago.

We currently live in Mountain View and work in Menlo Park. We dismissed Mountain View as an option in just 2 weeks of visiting open houses and finding out how little house I get for the money. Shortlist of areas I am interested in are below

1. Sunnyvale
2. Fremont
3. Milpitas
4. Santa Clara
5. San Jose
6. Union City (may be)

I am very unfamiliar with Santa Clara and San Jose. I see that the prices are affordable in certain areas of Santa Clara but I am not sure why and if they would hold its value.

I am overwhelmed by the size of SJ and the number of neighbourhoods there. I was told Evergreen is a great neighbourhood for new houses, great schools and value of house for money. I am not sure about any other neighbourhood. Schools are not important for us for now but we would like good school district in order to hold the house value/appreciate in the future.

Please advise on the pros/cons of any of these cities/neighbourhoods

Thanks in advance
Overwhelmed house hunter

The commute from Evergreen to Menlo Park would be crushing. I had a student who worked on Sand Hill Road and came to my house near Aborn/White, and eventually she decided to just pay more per lesson so I would come to her house (near Bascom/880) instead. I've seen stop and go all the way from Page Mill Road into downtown SJ on 280, and then the 280/101 merge is a slow crawl as well until really late in the evening.

Without knowing specifically what budget you have, it's going to be hard to suggest anything, but I would tend to point you to southern Sunnyvale closer to 85.

Thanks Sonarrat. My budget is under 800K. The problem with Sunnyvale is how much I can get for the money. I know its the location I would be paying for. But the houses are so old and crappy. I am guessing Fremont houses will be newer, bigger and better looking

There's some nicer areas of Redwood City that might fit you. Good luck!

Is the Menlo Park place near 280? If so, would you consider Half Moon Bay? I checked all of San Mateo County, and that seems to give you the most bang for the buck for newer homes.
