We're flying out to spend that weekend with our son, which will be our first Mother's Day together since high school because his finals overlapped it all four years of college. (He started working in SJ last summer.) So I do want something pretty nice although not wildly extravagant.

I've come up with four options for a festive brunch: The Fairmont in downtown San Jose, the Crowne Plaza or Westin in Palo Alto, and the Dolce Hayes Mansion south of SJ, which looks the most intriguing. I did consider Monterey or San Francisco but felt the drive times would take away too much of the day. Has anyone had experience with any of these brunches? Or is there something better that I've missed?

On a related note, Santa Cruz is having "Art & Chocolate" both days that weekend. Is this worth the drive over? Apparently a dozen galleries are open for the walk and offer chocolate in some form. I thought that might be fun for that Saturday, then maybe hit the beach if the weather is good. Thx!

Filoli (The mansion/estate from "Dallas" tv show) in Woodside, Villa Montalvo in Saratoga, the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, and the Hayes Mansion in SJ would all make for intriguing visits. Depends on how extravagant you want to go.

Thanks for those suggestions - I would love to go to Filoli! The Carrington Mansion! Blake, Crystal, Alexis! Boy, does that take me back... (I believe the Ewing Ranch is still in Dallas. ) Not to mention the garden tour. But that $85/pp - I did run it by my husband but apparently the $55 at the Hayes Mansion is our upper range (which rules out the Mountain Winery). I am investigating the Villa Montalvo now - between that and the Hayes, are there any major differences?

Hayes Mansion in SJ would be really lovely I heard through a good friend that their brunches are really delicious and well worth the money. Montalvo is gorgeous and I don't think you can go wrong with any of those 2 choices. As far as Santa Cruz, I'd suggest if the weather permits you should absolutely carve a day out to go. Check out the festival, check out the beach board walk and if you have time cruise over to Capitola and check out that adorable beach town too. You're in for a really lovely time and a most excellent Mother's Day!

Normally yes, but it just got whacked by a flood that messed up much of downtown, so it might be a little funky right now.
