Smile Turlock is Growing...

I don't think you would recognize Turlock if you've been away for a few years.

Monte Vista crossings used to be in the middle of farm land and now it is destination shopping... Home Depot, Lowes, Safeway and about 50 other stores and shops.

Heck Turlock even has a couple of new hotels and restaurants...

The City Fathers noticed a few years back that residents had to travel in order to buy goods and services... taking dollars out of the city...

That all changed and Turlock is growing because of it... Don't forget the University is also there and new homes are being built.

The question is... how do you like central valley living?

Hot in the summer? Cold in Winter? A drive to mtns and ocean? The daughter is moving out to that area for a very good job from the east coast.

It's hot in the summer - 90's and sometimes 100, but the humidity is reasonable. In the winter, during the rainy season, it's usually in the 50's during the day. The ocean is about a 2 hour drive to the west and the mountains are about 2 - 3 hours to the east.

I grew up in Turlock...it definitely is not the same. Like Ultrarunner said there is more shopping and new developments. As for the weather, its gets hot in the summer...high 90's and sometimes over 100. Dont worry though, its a dry heat and almost every home and apt has ac. The winters are not bad except for the fog, which usually burn off. If you drive any where late at night or early morning expect to hit some bad fog. As for the housing, prices are going up just like every where else in California. However, it is still considerably cheaper than the bay area, but then wages are also lower in the central valley. Theres a farmers market in old downtown...I'm not sure when it is though. I dont live there anymore, but I do visit often as my mother still lives there. As I recall there really isnt that much to do there, which may have changed. For fun, we use to go to the lake...either Don Pedro, Pinecrest or the Delta, or if we wanted city fun we would head to SF. All in reasonable driving distance. Yosemite also isnt too far from Turlock.
It really depends on what she likes to do. If shes use to NY city, she may be very bored in Turlock. The best thing for her to do is to come out and stay a week or so to get a feel for it...Turlock is not for everyone.

We drove out there for a one-time event and it was one of the most depressing places I'd ever been. Very hot and dry. Bad vibe. I can't say quite what it was but we high tailed it outta there as quickly as we could. Vast difference from the Bay Area!
