I'll admit I got 2, because for some reason, I not only did the math in the parentheses first, I assumed the 2 attached to it had to be calculated first as well.

I'm guessing that is not right...? Because in reality, it's really 48/2 x 12 because of the left to right rule?

I am going to go out on a limb here and postulate that women say '2' and men say '288'. Not an absolute rule but for this small sample size, it seems to hold pretty well.

The correct answer is 219.

48÷2=24
24*9=216
216+3=219

Q.E.D. - all these brackets and rules just confuse things - just read it from left to right. Unless you are Arabic then the answer is 0.5

Implicit multiplication has higher precedence than explicit multiplication (which has the same precedence as division).

Well shoot...I got 288 too.

No wonder I had to retake Algebra more times than I'd care to admit.

ETA: Wait, google agrees with me.

I found it funny, so many people got this equation wrong. I'm a recent college grad, so this stuff is still fresh in my mind. The answer is...

288

*lesson*

If the equation was 48 + 2(9+3)...then you would go 48 + 24 etc

^^^ Notice that the company is called Texas Instruments ... Wouldn't have happened with Silicon Valley Instruments calculators. (j/k)

This explains what TI was trying to accomplish.

Implied Multiplication Versus Explicit Multiplication on TI Graphing Calculators. - Knowledge Base by Texas Instruments - US and Canada

But it was a big failure in my opinion because of the example provided in this thread (which TI was not trying to shortcut, all they were trying to do is allow variables to be entered in a more natural form). e.g. a ÷ bc, they felt that the user really wanted a ÷ (bc).

TI (and other calculators that tried to do this), is a big FAIL. Let the user enter the expression properly
