Default Best place to live, commutable to Belmont under $1000/ month challenge!

I'm looking for the best town/city/neighborhood to live in within a commutable distance ( maybe 40 minutes driving) from Belmont. Looking for a studio or 1 br under $1000/month. Any suggestions?

(i dont care about nightlife, and no i dont mind a little grit/unpleasantness, but would like SAFETY)

I'll make you cookies if your give me the best suggestion!!! ( though i will have to mail them from NY!) hehe

Thanks!

Redwood city is your probably your best bet, everything east of El Camino is a tad gritty but not too bad. Everything near down is very centrally located with stores and restaurants near by.
