Default Road Trip TV show advice in Santa Cruz

Hey,
I'm with an Irish Travel TV series that's following 3 guys who roadtrip across the US in search of the quirky, wild, traditional and fun. We're going to be shooting in Santa Cruz in late September... anyone out there have any suggestions for adventurous things to do or see in ? Any cool events on at that time? Any zany ideas for local things we can have these guys do?
Thanks!

-I suggest surfing and kayaking, since that is such a big part of Santa Cruz culture.

-There are some great areas for mountain biking on trails that pass through redwoods. I think Big Basin will take you from high up in the redwoods, all the way down to the beach.

-There are lots of congo drummers by the beach (West Cliff). There are lots of fun and quirky events in Santa Cruz, though don't know of any in September.

-Good luck, and I will write about more if I think of them.
