These remarks apply to the areas I'm looking at: mostly Cambrian and parts of Campbell. In some other parts of the Bay Area, renting still seems much cheaper than buying - Mountain View, where I used to live, comes immediately to mind.
In the areas that are known by everyone to have great schools, renting is hugely cheaper than buying. Then there are the areas that have good schools, but most people don't know about. 95118 is one of those areas and so it presents a pretty dang good value for buying.
