I don't think it's that hard to understand. The role of Government is a huge dividing issue between Liberals and Conservatives. If you're ignorant, and don't understand, fundamentally, what a liberal or a conservative is, then I can see how you would think this isn't a Right-wing vs. Left-wing debate.

A bag law, while trivial to some, goes completely against the core values of the United States and is diametrically opposed to Conservative ideals. Any self-respecting conservative should opposed something like this. but hey, This is Californian. A state that many would have no qualm with it being grouped together with Europe's PIGS.
It must be exhausting to be you.

Maybe we should enact a teabag law. Diametrically opposed to childish loudmouth Conservative ideals. (They were so much more thoughtful when they were conservative with a lower case "c")

Who needs such a law when there is a whole state that is already a Fabian "utopia?"

Ha, I love how the conservative mindset tells them that private citizens are sane, mature and responsible (people that would never let a plastic bag tarnish the Earth) while they all feel compelled to be armed so as to protect themselves from a world of dangerous, drug-addicted welfare cases...

Little do they know, the real danger is in the mirror.

Of course there are idiots who throw out (valuable) plastic bags.

And there are smart people who re-use and recycle them.

Just like anything, there are good and bad players. So, does that mean we need to ban the ball?

A better analogy would be banning lead paint in toys..... not all kids chew on toys, but there's always a danger. And you can still have toys, just not ones with that particular paint on it.

You can still get bags, just not the exact same ones as before.

You certainly have to wonder about people who are willing to waste dollars in gas costs in order to get a free plastic bag when they shop. These are the least ecologically conscious people on the whole planet. They're probably also the ones who insist on having their water delivered to them on trucks in huge plastic bottles instead of just turning on the tap.

I'm glad you brought that up.

Take a look at the hysterical RoHS regulations that came out of Europe.

The main core of them is hysteria about lead and certain flame retardant compounds, plus a number of other much feared substances. Granted, if I chew on lead containing paint or inhale byproducts of burning leaded gasoline, that will cause unquestionable harm. Whereas, I can shoot a lead bullet, that bullet will sit in the woods for a thousand years, protected by the oxide that forms on its surface, and essentially none of that lead will ever enter the environment in any meaningful way. Same goes for a monitor or circuit board.

The current implementation of "environmental" law appears to be 1/4 science and 3/4 emotion, driven by politicians seeking the votes of the moronic herd.

It does when the game is not really worth playing to begin with. Seriously, whose life has been disrupted by a lack of plastic bags in their kitchen? It's not like we're installing cameras in people's homes to monitor their recycling/littering habits. No real line has been crossed by denying people free convenience.
