You should have more options in Redwood City. I used to live there for many years so let me know if you have specific questions.

Oh ok. Do you know of any specific apartment complexes?

I loved the 707 Leahy Apartments in Redwood City, but they were about $1800.

Leahy's only a block from the shabby side of El Camino.

$1400 1 BR in Menlo Park:Cozy 1 BR apartment in wonderful Allied Arts neighborhood
old and probably small but has loads of charm and a walkable neighborhood.

There are reviews of that apartment building here: Atrium Garden Studios Apartment Ratings, Reviews, Map, Rents, and other San Jose apartments for rent from ApartmentRatings.com and here: Atrium Gardens - San Jose, CA

Personally, I think that's a long commute. I'd expand to include Belmont as well ... like these:
Upper unit with Balcony
650ft² - Perfect Location/Ground Floor w/ walk-in closet & yard

It's a bit busy of an area but is very safe and walkable.

Or this one in Mtvw: http://www.padmapper.com/show.php?ty...95206&src=main

Those prices ($1350) are the same for an apartment in mountain view. Wondering if anything is cheaper?

Use padmapper.com and see. I doubt if there are many in the Peninsula.
The ones I mentioned above look decent from a location perspective.
