I am doing a travel assignment in Santa Cruz and am trying to decide where to live. I want to live off the Caltrain so I can go to SF on the weekends and what not. I am willing to have a commute but wasn't sure where a good place to live would be. I am like busy areas so somewhere not too suburban. any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks!

I always recommend Los Gatos for people who want / need to live on the eastern side of the S.C. mountains.
I'll do it again for you although i don't know where the nearest caltrain option is but i imagine it's not too far from Los Gatos.
You can get to Santa Cruz in less than 30 minutes from downtown Los Gatos during non-commuter times.
Or you can live somewhere in Santa Cruz county and travel to S.F. when needed.
Since you'll be doing that during the weekends you'll avoid the commuter madness.
What is your rental budget?
That's a factor.

That is a good suggestion, I will look into Los Gatos. I am hoping to spend no more than 2000 for a one bedroom, furnished preferred

While Los Gatos is certainly very nice, the OP suggested living off of Caltrain, for easy weekend access into the city. I would suggest one of the many nice peninsula cities, where there are nice downtowns and Caltrain access. These include (from north to south) Burlingame, San Mateo, San Carlos, Menlo Park, Palo Alto and Mountain View.
