Sooooo, how bad is the daily commute from Cupertino to SSF? We are going to be moving to the peninsula this summer and I've kind of narrowed it down to a couple of cities. Cupertino is where I want to end up since the public schools rock, but its a bit of a commute for the wife. Google maps says its about 40minutes without traffic on 280. How true is that and is this typical commute times in the bay?

We are coming from Sacramento and a 30 mile cross city commute is no more than an hour.

You'd be taking 280 and 380, no question. The morning commute isn't bad, but the evening trip back can get cramped starting around Page Mill Road. Still better than the many slow stretches you'd have to endure trying to take 101, and you should have no delays on the long beautiful drive from Palo Alto to San Bruno.

As to the character of Cupertino, as far as I've heard, the schools score highly on standardized tests because of heavy parent involvement and the demographics of the schools, but aren't necessarily the best for a well-rounded education. If it's possible, Los Altos, Palo Alto or the much closer Peninsula city Burlingame might be more suitable.
