Yes, and Facebook replaces the Sun campus here. Things have changed a lot from this map. Some companies don't exist any more.

maybe i was only half-right though. microsoft may still be in that location on the old map? it certainly has changed a lot. SGI used to be where google is now. but i see even the newer map shows SGI, when in fact, I think the name of what is left of it is something a little different.

The new small SGI is Silicon Graphics International, originally Rackable Systems, based in Fremont. The original big SGI where google currently lies was called Silicon Graphics Inc. Rackable bought what is left of it and changed its name to the new SGI.

I honestly don't know how teachers can afford to live here, unless their spouse is a well off professional (Doctor, Lawyer, business exec, etc). It just doesn't seem like a good choice if you're a college educated professional to live like you are impoverished (poor quality/small apartment, bad school district or very long commute...pick your poison).

If you don't have kids it's not a bad gig. I dated a guy who was a teacher and he was making 68K and great benefits. It's not luxury living, but not bad. 2 teachers together can make ~140K, which is above the area's median income and they have better benefits than people in private industry.

With kids, it can be a grind, but that is true for most people in this area.

Doctors and lawyers can still support the whole family with single income. They earn the equivalence of 2 engineers I think. Teacher+Engineer or Teacher+Teacher are fine unless their standard is really high.
