Interesting article on living in your car in Palo Alto.

Quote:
Kurt Varner moved to Palo Alto from Los Angeles in March to start an Internet company. But instead of renting an apartment, the 25-year-old has been residing in a different kind of abode: his car.

Every 72 hours, Mr. Varner moves his car around Palo Alto to avoid violating the city's parking rules, and he tries to be as inconspicuous as possible to local residents and other car-dwellers. Mr. Varner sometimes does some rudimentary cooking at a co-working space in Mountain View, where he codes during the day. And he showers at a local 24 Hour Fitness gym. His total cost for the gym and co-working space is $139 a month...

Somehow, it seems questionable that the city of Palo Alto claims it's too poor to find a space for its homeless population. Median home price of $1.34 million, among other things, suggests otherwise.
Residents might prefer such a solution over random dudes fouling their lawns.

As one of the commenters on the article said, zoning laws are a big part of the problem in Palo Alto, and throughout California, really. These effin' laws keep home prices and rents high...If all those Palo Alto NIMBYs want uber-restrictive zoning laws and no new apartments in their back yard, then they will have to deal with the consequences of people working full time who can't afford even a very basic apartment. Serves 'em right.

Palo Alto only admits homeless people that are smart young types who are there to create new internet startups. Just ask hsw.

Maybe he'll outline the little-known homeless Stanford engineer epidemic rampant throughout Palo Alto, surely exacerbated by commies. Tough times, ya know.
