Hello all! I could really use some help here. We are moving from a two bedroom house in Louisville, KY with a toddler to the bay area. My husband will be working in San Mateo and I'm a stay-at-home mama. I would love to find a house, townhome, or duplex to live in rather than an apartment complex to live in. San Jose seems to have more options as far as that goes for our budget range, but I'm wondering if the commute via train would be crazy long for my husband? Any insight would be amazing!

Thanks!

Caltrain timetable: Weekday Timetable

About 40 minutes from San Jose to San Mateo. There are express trains that are faster and trains that stop at every station that are slower.

Spare the commute and get a place in San Mateo County. San Mateo has some nice areas as do many of the surrounding cities. I believe Redwood City has a lot of rentals so you might want to check that out to. Like San Mateo, some good and lesser areas.

I'd recommend starting your search in San Mateo vicinity then moving outward if necessary.

San Mateo is alot more expensive. Not sure if it's the kind of place for somebody hailing from Kentucky. I would say a better choice would be Marin County, Sunnyvale or Palo Alto. Just suggesting!

Realistically the OP will probably have to look at the East Bay. I'd also recommend posting on the SF - OAK forum this one is sort of quiet.

Palo Alto is more expensive. Marin is a lot farther away in terms of distance and the commute and no cheaper. I concur with the approach to start in and around San Mateo to see what's available and then move further out as needed depending on budget.
