I used to like that Maggiano's place when it first opened up. But heard from an old co-worker that it's gone downhill fast. She said they're no longer very generous with the food....

Seems to be mentioned here a bunch.

This!! You are so dead on. I don't like the fakeness either but at least there's some signs of attractive people in this city. I hear you on the SoCal, whenever I visit family down there I basically break my neck checking out the girls near the beach or anywhere for that matter. In SJ, I don't even bother looking into the car next to me at a stop sign. So I think Santana Row is a good thing; it's an option for those that wanna dress up and look good now and then. I'm all about options, and this is where San Jose fails apocalyptically (made up word I know ) and my biggest prob with the area. Lack of options for food, nightlife, housing, etc etc. My saying is "throw a bunch of stuff out there and let me decide" *Meaning whether you use it or not having CHOICES is always a positive. Visit my new home of Phoenix, AZ and see what I mean. Or better yet, Dallas. Amenities everywhere in that city! It's amazing, really.

I dislike the engineering culture also. These people are harmless but I don't gel with them much; not a computer wiz and don't care about the latest gadgets. It's not normal anywhere really but here.

Maybe it is a bit sad that this area doesn't have more places like that--i.e. having social pressure to look nice when you go there.

For this area, looking nice is usually seen as elitist IMO--it's just not the norm among different classes to always look nice, as say in western European countries or Japan. I think dressing nicely in the bay area translates over into "oh, he/she must be wealthy" or "they are just pretending to be wealthy" because he/she dresses very well. Dressing nicely conjures up more negative perceptions (elitism) than positive, but would be great if that collective perception was changed and positive perceptions about fashion and looking put together were not so tied in with being wealthy or class status.
I'm a laid back casually dressed guy and I think it's a shame. Women here are not expected to look pretty; so unnatural. Here in AZ, girls seem to want guys attention more. In SJ, there is an aura of disinterest. There no sexual or flirtatious vibe anywhere aside from maybe Santana Row. Both (single) genders lose because of this.

Santana Row's a great family hangout during early afternoons and our five year old loves playing in the chess area. It's different things for different people at different times, and I find the weekday post-lunch vibe to be neighborly and not fake at all.

Oh, I did my grad school at ASU, so I'm very familiar with the nightlife in Scottsdale. I agree wholeheartedly about the caliber of the women and the entertainment options. Not only that, but these women are hot and more approachable than most Bay Area women. I'm married now, so its not an issue, but I very much enjoyed my single days in AZ. Out there, if you are successful, you are considered a "big baller". Out here, everyone and their mother has a Harvard MBA.

My experience visiting Dallas has been quite the opposite, I've visited Dallas many times, my brother has lived in the area for 14 years, living in either Las Colinas area, or now close to Grapevine. The entire area outside of Dallas proper seems to be generic suburbs, a lot of strip malls, and a lack of variety for restaurants, there are a lot of chain restaurants, or simple Chinese restaurants, but I don't see the variety of restaurants you get here, every time I've gone there we end up going to either Oak Lawn or downtown Dallas because of that.

I think Santana Row is overrated, there are plenty of good restaurants in San Jose, and vicinity, it is no San Francisco though.

I don't think he was leading with the restaurants here. It was more around the hotness of the women and the quality of the nightlife.

If one wants to broadcast to the world how much he yearns to perv out in public, perhaps ASU would be the better option (in fact, absolutely, though the possibility of accidental statutory rape is infinitely higher there), but there are plenty of people who do the same at the clubs in downtown SJ, complete with heels, ties, bling, and Cosmopolitans.

Then again, if we want to pretend we're on the East Coast or in Europe, then why not move out there?

Same douchebags in downtown SJ and Scottsdale, but they look a whole lot better in Scottsdale!

That's a shame (at least from a nightlife perspective). Scottsdale is a lot more fun.

This guy knows what's up! I'm sure you noticed women just in your regular errand routine were more attractive. I go to my local Walgreens here and often see a cute cashier or pharmacist working. Don't see that much in SJ.

I'm new here trying to meet people and what not while also trying to stay out the nightlife/alcohol deal for now. We'll see if that lasts haha.

But this is what I'm talking about when I say choices, if you wanna get crazy at the clubs you can do it here. Whether that's appealing to you or not, it's an option. Same thing as having a bunch of fast food places or quick dining choices. Do I eat fast food much? Not much anymore. But having OPTIONS is always a good thing. Not just things I want; but for EVERYBODY. Throw a bunch of stuff at me and let me decide what I wanna do. That's what's going on here and in many other places in the country. Dallas was like that when I visited and hear Atlanta also, lot of stuff.

Really? We don't have much variety of restaurants or restaurants in genral in SJ. So under-served I can't believe it. When I was in Dallas, I stayed in Addison which is it's own little town near the heart of Dallas. There were food places as far as the eye could see! It was amazing. A mix of chain and local places as well as regular more casual places. The front desk even mentioned the number of restaurants within a mile or two and it was staggering.

I heard the same thing about generic suburbs. But if they're generic and nice what's wrong with that? The area near SMU is beautiful. Really nice (and big!) houses on tree-lined streets. Dallas is awesome. The food, the women (some with cute accents), sports, place has so much going for it now wonder people are moving there.

Well my reason for pointing out PHX and Dallas was more cause of amenities. Food, malls, entertainment, etc. That's where these places excel and the women thing is just additional. If they had gross women but tons of stuff the cities would still be cool. And when in Dallas, you have Fort Worth a few miles away which has a more western feel and some real friendly people. Has it's own university (TCU, play D-1 sports), nightlife, and downtown with shopping and restaurants.

Plenty of people are. They get a ton of tourists during the winter months who enjoy the amazing restaurants, awesome mall (Fashion Square) and endless shopping and boutiques, antiques etc. Then you throw in the nightlife, plus some golf and hiking all while being close to a huge university and many professional sports team. Place has a ton going for it. Tourists don't visit boring places, and they come here. I think there's a lot of retired athletes and musicians (Brett Michaels I think?) who call the Scottsdale area home. These people have the $ to live wherever they want.

I looked up how many night-spots we have and it's unreal. This is not to mention wine bars, restaurants with a lively bar, or the nearby casinos that have nightclubs and lounges.

Never even went to any spots in dtown SJ. Looked up a youtube video and the place was dead. Los Gatos is kinda cool, but there's just a small amount of generic bars and even those never seemed crowded. People I know always considered LG and Campbell the place to go out.... so figured that was as good as it gets.
