(By the way, is this the best forum to post questions about Santa Cruz? It seemed like the closest geographic area)

Can anyone tell me what the rental market is like in Santa Cruz? I can see what prices are like on Craigslist, so I'm more asking about the competition. I'm coming from the East Bay where there's a lot of competition to rent, but it's nowhere near as crazy as San Francisco. How does Santa Cruz compare? Do nicer apartments or duplexes get snapped up instantly? Do potential renters need to be glued to Craigslist and ready to call the instant a place is posted, checkbook in hand?

When is the student rush for apartments--starting in June, maybe? I'd like to try renting before then in hopes of getting a better price.

Wow, did I post this in the completely wrong forum or something? Will some kind soul direct me to a more appropriate forum if this is not the right one? I've never had a City Data post get zero replies--I must be doing something wrong.
