My better half was at home today and got a door-to-door person handing out flyers. Our natural instinct is to think "scam", but this one got us wondering. It's for "YEP Energy", and it seems like an electric/gas supplier that is based out of Houston, TX and now they must be expanding into northern California.

Some web searches don't turn up a lot about them. Some reviews from Texas are 5 stars, but just as many 1 star reviews, so inconclusive there. Their official website doesn't list any numbers, but it looks like for San Jose, they're just offering natural gas services. They allude to lower rates, but I can't seem to find any hard evidence.

If you are a YEP energy user, please enlighten us. What are your rates like? Opinion of this company? Was the switch painful for you?

PG&Es Core Gas Aggregation Program; Frequently Asked Questions

I'm curious about their rates. I'm a PG&E customer again after a nine year gap (Silicon Valley Power customer in Santa Clara).

The only thing that changes is who gets paid for the gas, right. I mean, the way these things work is, if YEP's customers served by PG&E use XXX amount of gas, YEP has to at some point deliver PG&E XXX amount of gas, and your money for the gas goes to YEP. Transportation is still done by PG&E, so they still get that fee, and PG&E still gets the monthly service fee, right?

I don't know about YEP, but a friend of mine asked me to switch over to XOOM, for natural gas and my experiences so far, have been mixed.

The switchover from PG&E to XOOM as a natural gas provider was very smooth. It is the billing coordination between these two companies that causes so much annoyance. I receive calls from XOOM indicating that my account is "past due" and to call PG&E. I call PG&E and they inform me that my account is "current" and "up to date". I call XOOM back and they inform me that PG&E is not forwarding my payments to them and that they will follow-up with PG&E directly.

What a mess!

@ccm123 Did you just start using XOOM, or have you been up and running for a few billing cycles? Do you find it to be actually cheaper per unit of gas (taking into account delivery fees and whatnot)?

I would say, NOPE to YEP. The billing BS between XOOM and PG&E is but one example of what one can expect.

I started using XOOM in June 2012, so I have been up for a few billing cycles. The strange thing is that the earlier billing cycles were very smooth and these annoyances between PG&E and XOOM just started in December, 2012.

To be honest, I have not calculated the differences in rates between PG&E and XOOM, but given the problems recently, I am planning to leave XOOM as soon as my 12 month commitment is over. I have a lot of other things to attend to, and wasting time calling XOOM over minor billing matters (who has rude customer service representatives, by the way) and PG&E, is something I don't have the time or patience for.

The coordination between PG&E and XOOM is awful! Before XOOM, I never had these problems!

Yes, agreed. It would seem that possibly PG&E may not be "prompt" about sending my funds over to XOOM, so that I (the customer) gets annoyed with XOOM and switches back to PG&E. You just never know.

I have been using YEP Energy services for both my restaurant & house since April 2012 and they are providing a signficant savings to my gas bill each month in the range of 10%-25%. Basically, I have been tracking PG&E Procurement Rates vs. YEP rates for gas supply charges since April 2012 and here is the differences by month:

Month PGE Price YEP Price
Apr-12 $0.3224 $0.2805
May-12 $0.3292 $0.2422
June-12 $0.4269 $0.3120
July-12 $0.5446 $0.3664
Aug-12 $0.4343 $0.3472
Sept-12 $0.3919 $0.3528
Oct-12 $0.3997 $0.3591
Nov-12 $0.4983 $0.4485
Dec-12 $0.4490 $0.4041
Jan-13 $0.4292 $0.3863
Feb-13 $0.4696 $0.4226
Mar-13 $0.4057 $0.3651
Apr-13 $0.4709 $0.4238

Pacific Gas & Electric - Tariffs

So, I feels confident enough to refer YEP Energy to my business partners & families & friends to try YEP Energy services.

I have to ask: any billing issues between YEP and PG&E?
