I think for a family of four...200K would be comfortable and middle class. Could you live on less? Certainly. I think 150K would be okay if you don't want to own a home in a 'hot' school district or you're good with a townhome or condo, or maybe your kids have a few years before they need to go to school ("good" district in pricey area or private school).

And ITA, big homes (as in more than 1700/1800 sq ft, and those are gems) are not going to be in a middle class price range. They are far and few between.
