Default suburbs around san jose

My boyfriend and I are looking to move out to California in about 6 months or so, and I am planning on attending graduate school while he works. Is there a place in the surrounding San Jose area that may be slightly less expensive than within San Jose itself? He is looking at about 70k+ for jobs, so suggestions on types of housing (esp apartments and such) would be really helpful. Thanks!

There's Campbell, but some parts of town (i.e. Winchester & Campbell Ave) are one step up from the ghetto. You could probably rent in a nice part of Santa Clara, like the area around The Alameda south of the airport, for less than a comparable place in San Jose.

Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Cupertino are all decent choices. Try Craigslist.com for rentals.
