I saw on Channel 2 tonight this packed city council meeting in SJ where a thousand people were upset cause the first vietnamese-american city councilperson in SJ proposed naming a retail strip on story rd "Saigon". They almost universally object because they want it called "Little Saigon".

Im thinking-what's the difference? anyone know?

From what I understand, it's actually "Vietnam Town" versus "Little Saigon." One is more encompassing but bland while the other is specific to a single city but represents the South and why so many Vietnamese people now live here. Personally, I hope they go with Little Saigon.

I agree with the "Little Saigon"

It's about a little nationalism and pride to the Viet immigrant community. They've overcome adversity and made a name for themselves in the South Bay so they want to establish some recognition. But better business sense would dictate "Vietnam Town".

It's now become "Little Saigon" and "Vietnamese Business District," with the latter winning. I find this very disappointing.

I believe that's the exact wording on the signs in Orange County's Little Saigon.

The difference here is that it's one and not the other.

That's dumb. Our signs have "Vietnamese Business District" below in small letters. I guess its so people understand that Little Saigon isn't a separate city, just a part of town. Of course it was known unofficially as Little Saigon long before anyone put a sign up.

this is a very emotional issue on the part of the vietnamese expatriates

they feel displaced and feel that little slice of sj is their new home in which case it needs to be renamed appropriately

*edit*

this is a 2007 thread???

it was at the top of the sj forum

regardless, this is still an emotional issue for the older vietnamese immigrants who fled vietnam at the end of the vietnam war

I always wondered why it has to be Little Saigon. Why not Big Saigon? Saigon itself has ceased to exist as an official city...

And it cracks me up that that specific section has a whole lot less Vietnamese than the Tully/King section. That section should be "Saigon", but I guess the owners of Grand Century wants more name recognition.
