Assuming cost is not an option. I assume DT SJ/MV/PA, Campbell, LG will be in the mix but not sure which is more vibrant

From what I understand, Mountain View and Campbell are pretty good. Palo Alto just have one strip. Sunnyvale isn't that bad in small doses. If you like a more quaint bar stool type of vibe, Sunnyvale isn't too bad.

Though it depends on what you like. For me personally, I don't like downtown San Jose as much because too many college kids hang out there. Same thing with Palo Alto. But then again, maybe I'm getting to old to really hang out.

Santana Row and Downtown San Jose is pretty much the best in the South Bay for nightlife, due to their quality and sheer quantity. There are no other competitions.

Now about Downtown San Jose. It's a pretty big place, thus to some it looks "empty" at night. But that's because everyone is inside a bar/lounge/club already. Downtown San Jose is gigantic compared to the other town's downtowns, and thus can actually accommodate all the patrons. And because Downtown San Jose is a pretty big place, there many "clusters" throughout the Downtown.

Mountain View has one dance lounge open until midnight, everything else close up shop at 9ish. PA bars close later, but has no dance lounge.

Sunnyvale has that Pure nightclub (used to be called Abyss). No bars in the downtown area. Sunnyvale "nightlife" is all about eating along the El Camino Real and occasionally hitting up Pure/Abyss.

Campbell's Pruneyard shuts down at 9ish, with only Rock Bottom open. Campbell's downtown has a few bars open, I don't remember any night clubs in Downtown Campbell.

Los Gatos shuts down at 9ish, except for Charley's night club and a few bars (Carry Nation, Black Watch). Sorta like Mountain View and PA combined together (one dance lounge, a few bars). Charley's and Black Watch would be my recommendations.

If you mean outside of SF though, then I'd definitely recommend Berkeley and Oakland.

For someone who thinks that San Francisco has the best nightlife, prolly the next best for them would be Guerneville.

Guerneville doesn't have any flying unicorns like SF, I'm afraid

Best nightlife outside SF:
  • downtown Mountain View
  • downtown Redwood City
  • downtown San Jose
Probably Oakland would be at the top of the list but I've only gone to Yoshi's a couple times.

Actually Berkeley has good nightlife too.

You must be blind. There are about 3 bars I can think of off the top of my head.
