Back when I lived in San Jose (1972-1990; then still close by in Sunnyvale until 2001), the Story/King intersection and some surrounding neighborhoods were the main concern. FWIW, the Evergreen Valley and Silver Creek Valley Country Club neighborhoods are very safe...probably the safest in the eastern region and easily on par with many west San Jose neighborhoods. Certainly safer than the dumpy Burbank neighborhood in west San Jose. They are more suburban and affluent than areas that are just 2-5 miles east of downtown. I still know some people in San Jose, so would be very surprised if this info is not correct.

Berryessa in northeast San Jose is reasonably safe for the most part (area from Milpitas border to Berryessa Avenue).

There are some sketchy neighborhoods just east of the Monterey Highway too (county fairgrounds area is one of them) where caution in the evening is advised. To the immediate west of Monterey Highway the neighborhoods are a little better.

Current residents can provide more detail.

Being in west San Jose is a general statement. If you live in the Burbank neighborhood, that is nothing to brag about crime-wise. (It is in a convenient location to downtown, San Jose City College, Campbell, Valleyfair/Santana Row area though...will grant it that). If you are in or around Saratoga Avenue or the west SJ neighborhoods bordering the cities of Saratoga or Cupertino, then it is much safer. Cambrian Park and Willow Glen in southwest San Jose are also safe.

The term "East Side" is a somewhat generic term for the high crime parts of the eastern part of San Jose. There are some very nice parts of East San Jose though like southeast Evergreen and the East foothills.

When people use the term "East San Jose" or the "East Side" they're typically referring to the general area that's surrounded by Mabury Rd. to the north, Hwy. 101 to the west (along with some neighborhoods west of 101), White Rd. to the east and and Tully Rd. to the south. That's somewhat where the typical informal boundaries are. The further south and east you head from there, the nicer it gets.

These are lagging indicators of the waning middle class.

SJ (and the Bay Area as a whole) is becoming a two class community. It is tragic.

Are we speaking of Burbank in the 80/90's? Different story these days. Only dumpy on one or two streets where the sketchy apartments are. Everybody is finding out about this place and swooping up every house on the market, which are typically pushing $600k now, and that's often before major refurbs. We might still have the Pink Poodle...but now there's a BMW motorcycle shop on the corner next door. Time's-a-changin' (Time Deli across the street ain't changin' much, though...still quite good).

Time Deli...good tri tip sandwiches are served there as I remember (had been there a couple times myself). Yes, the area is better than it used to be, but you need to exercise more caution at night than other west San Jose neighborhoods. Hard to believe you need to shell out more than half a million for a home in that neighborhood these days.

The most recent stabbing on Jose Figueres is in a total s**thole neighborhood on the East Side. My brother lived on that same street with his wife and kids for about three years because it was all they could afford at the time. I hated going to visit him there. As soon as he could afford it, he moved immediately.

news stories are not an accurate gauge of what daily life is really like in a place.
