Hi all,

I will be staying in Los Gatos for a few months and need to commute to Palo Alto on weekdays. Is this possible without a car? Should I just buck up and rent a car (I'm Canadian so can't buy a car yet).

No, not really. Los Gatos is kind of isolated, at least in terms of public transit, so it would probably take forever to get from there to PA by bus. If you had a car, it's an easy drive on highways 85 & 280 (maybe 101 depending on your exact work location), but can be slow-moving if you commute at rush hour. So I'm sorry to say, you might have to get a car ASAP! Los Gatos is beautiful, though.

Just to verify my thoughts, I routed a trip from Los Gatos to Palo Alto on 511.org (check out that site yourself for an idea of our transit system). Looks like it would take close to 2 hours, with 3 different trains/buses. As I said, not really feasible!

You can do 3 months for about $2400 with insurance. I use to rent car when I arrived in US for about 4 months. Problem is that You will have to go on airport each month to do pick up and return ;-) San Jose Airport btw is cheaper then SFO.

My daughter made that same commute for over 5 years and was only able to do it by car. She and her husband researched the mass transit thoroughly and could not come up with a feasible route. She drove it at all different times and I know that during rush hours her drive was tedious but during off hours it was not so bad.

Go in early. The road is completely clear at 6:00 am, but packed from 8 am to noon. Same deal in the afternoon if you can leave around 3:00.

Packed until noon? Not in my experiences! I usually go to work between 10:30-12:00, and the traffic is typically cleared by then... I average 75-80mph pretty much the whole way, using highways 85 & 280.

The only times I hit morning traffic is when I go in early for meetings, which generally start at 9-9:30am. At that time of day it's still congested heading north, but not so bad going south (unfortunately I do go north).
