When you want to know what's going on around the bay, what web site do you use?

It could be breaking news (fire, car chase, etc.), or it could be 'events' (concerts, pumpkin festival, concerts, local fairs).

I have found that the mercury news site isn't that useful for breaking news, and the 'what's happening' non-news stuff isn't convenient to find.

Good question, and I'm glad you posted this. In fact, this forum is one of the only places I know of for decent discussion of local topics. Some might point out Craigslist, but try spending more than 2 minutes reading that before you become angry at the world (almost completely unmoderated = scum of humanity!).

But to the point:
- Willow Glen Charm (Facebook) - She's a realtor but is light on pushing listings. A lot of decent news (e.g. shops moving in/out of Willow Glen)
- Willow Glen Resident (Facebook) - Some online content related to that silly neighborhood print paper
- Willow Glen Crime Watch (Facebook) - You can see the pattern here, lol
- Willow Glen Back Fence - Actually an email list you sign up for. Old school Barely tolerable but easy to ignore with email filters. Read it when bored waiting for your dentist.
- Mercury News - Don't go there much these days though

There are more than a couple neighborhoods that have that "community newspaper" thing. I barely ever read mine, though.

I'm interested in finding out what is happening NOW (time critical, such as news) as well as 'festivals' (music, art, etc.) and I haven't really found a good site for either.

I guess nobody else has either.

For festivals and events, how about The Metro? Metroactive | Metro Newspaper Silicon Valley | News, Events, Movies, Clubs

As for time critical news, etc? For San Jose? I can't think of much besides the Mercury News website. Maybe they have some kind of Twitter feed you might enjoy?

I use Yelp for local sponsored events, sccgov.org for park related events and fandango for any special movie screenings etc..
As for time critical news I too browse mercury news but most often see someone on twitter post it before anywhere else.
Not much help I am afraid.

Fun Free Cheap is great - it's a listing of free and inexpensive events all around the Bay Area.

The San José reddit has become a decent resource these days. Likewise, other subreddits of broader or nearby areas.

San José: The Capital of Silicon Valley
The San Francisco Bay Area Reddit

There's a lot of jerks and complainers there, but they're both decent resources.

If you want to know about breaking news, local broadcast TV or radio would probably be best. So on radio, KGO, KCBS. On digital television, KRON's subchannel has 24 hour local news. That's channel 4.2 on broadcast television (antenna hooked up to your modern HDTV).

For a summary of major local events that day, the local newspaper is also good.
