After seeing way too many posts from posters who complain about hearing Spanish or other languages being spoken in public, in a very ethnocentric, xenophobic tone - you'll have to understand where I'm coming from.

My experience is just as valid as yours. I'm sorry you feel that way.

Has anybody shopped at Race St. seafood recently? The owners sold it (?2 years ago?) to some big corporate concern, and it was my understanding that the new owners didn't plan on keeping open the *fantastic* retail fish part of the business (they wanted to buy the wholesale fish operation and its suppliers, and sell the fish in *their* existing retail outlets).

So, has anybody bought fresh fish at Race Street in the last year?

I'm under the impression it's closed, too.

OK, have you tried Marina Foods in Cupertino? They have a pretty large fish portion in the store (well, they USED to at least - I haven't been inside in over 6-7 years)

How sad about Race Street market! I'd still go by there and see for yourself.

Yes - it's now just a restaurant operation - though that's still delicious!

Yes, they do. While their seafood section has always been good, the supermarket as a whole is a bit more beat up and chaotic than the new Ranch 99 on DeAnza Blvd.

I can advice you to go to Lion Chinese supermarket instead of Ranch 99 if you do not feel comfortable there. Lion has different locations, you can check them here using this link: Welcome to Lion Supermarket

My family does shopping at Lion located at Lion Plaza, 471 Saratoga Ave San Jose, CA 95129 about two times per week. This supermarket is cheap (even cheaper then Ranch) and has a big variety of fresh fish, fruits and vegetables. I never have any language issues there. Yes, some workers do not speak English perfectly, but common we are in SF Bay Area, and we can always use fingers and smiles to explain something
