RECENT COLLEGE GRAD... where to live around Milpitas? (San Jose, San Francisco: relocation, apartments)

Hi everyone! I am 22, just graduated from Arizona State and got a job in Milpitas. I will be moving in a month and need some serious guidance on where to live. I have always wanted to live in San Francisco... would it be feasible to commute daily from there? If so, how long would it take to commute? If not, where should I live around Milpitas? A little bit about my preferences...I want to live some place with more of a younger demographic (not too excited about living in suburbia), things to do, somewhere safe where rent is decently priced (1000 month). Help please! Thanks.

That would be a seriously miserable commute, and you'll have to fight tooth and nail to find even crappy places for $1000/mo in San Francisco. I would suggest Fremont first - it's a big town of over 200,000 people which is very much underrated by most in the Bay Area, and it's affordable without the negative connotations that usually come with affordability (high crime, uneducated populace). Plenty to do too, and there should be even more if the Raiders relocation deal ever goes through.

For a young single person living in SF would be great if you could afford it but the commute to Milpitas will kill you. Think 1 hour each way min. if there's no accidents - and there are always accidents.

Fremont, Milpitas, North San Jose is all culture-death for young people. Downtown San Jose might offer you some bit of young-people-ville with restaurants and nightclubs.

If you're a guy welcome to the land of men - the Bay Area. If you're a gal then maybe it's not so bad.

Original poster here. Any word on Sunnyvale, Palo Alto area? Any thoughts on those towns? Fun? Not so much? Things to do? High rents? Etc...

Maybe live in north san jose or in Milpitas. There's lots to do in the san jose area. The downtown section has lots of clubs, resteraunts, sports and concerts at the HP pavillion, etc. Lots of other areas if you don't mind driving. Of course lot to do in San Francisco and it would be better to live close to work and to drive to SF at non commute hours for the entertainment. Downtown Palo Alto is pretty cool too. Lots of stanford students there.
As a young person there is lots to do. Sunnyvale will not be a fun commute I think but rents are lower than Palo Alto. Have fun

I moved away from the Silicon Valley in 2003 after 10 years, but I still visit pretty often. Like others have pointed out, $1,000 won't get you far in the Bay Area. Downtown San Jose would be a fun experience for a young person, but I'm not sure what you'll find at your price range. Maybe get a roommate? I've always been kinda fond of Mountain View, and Castro Street is fairly lively at night. But Sunnyvale probably has better pricing.

PS: If you stay in the Bay Area for a while, and make more money, consider living in SF for a year. I regret that I never did.

PS2: Find out if your employer is near the Light Rail in Milpitas.

Milpitas is also a nice place to live.I say live around Dixon Landing Road.It is so much better here an there is Pomeroy a great school nearby

I really would love to live in Dixon Landing Road cause it has a park and a store nearby or you could also live in Beaumere Way too.

Anyone know of any apartments that are nice in Milpitas around Dixon Landing? Anyone heard of Mill Creek apartments? How are those?
