Hey... I lived in San Jose and Oakland... and it is nice that every once in a while the news cast doesn't start with a crime story in Oakland...
San Jose is not the safest large city, San Diego is.

Anyways, latest homicide update as of today:

San Jose: 7. Last homicide April 7, this time last year: 17 homicides
San Francisco: 21. Last homicide May 22, this time last year: 9 homicides
Oakland: 36. Last homicide May 23, this time last year: 34 homicides

San Jose is on track for 15 homicides this year, a 53% DECREASE from 2014. It would certainly be seen as an outlier and definitely not a new normal, as the number has such a ridiculous drop. 2016 could be the better bellwhether.

For what it's worth, San Diego is currently also on their 7th homicide. Pretty damn amazing for a city with 400,000 people more than San Jose, though the police force in San Diego is roughly 2,500, nearly 2.5x that of San Jose.

We signed up for the Nextdoor site and was sad to hear others complaining about things like mail theft, car windows being smashed and of course the homeless problems. We noticed the biggest change when IMB closed, replaced by more Walmarts and second hand stores, as high paid workers moved on. Discovery1's link, added to the crime, makes me wonder why anyone would not consider moving to a less expensive place. Nice weather doesn't pay the bills, especially the high mortgage.

The California I once knew just doesn't exist anymore.

I'm not sure what you mean. Overall crime in California, and the country, has been declining for awhile now.

The 5 safest large cities in the US are:

1. San Diego
2. San Jose
3. New York
4. Los Angeles
5. San Antonio.

There is a big difference between San Diego and number 5 San Antonio which has a murder rate 3 times that of San Diego. San Jose is not much worse than San Diego. San Diego does have a very low property crime rate.
Yes, I don't dispute that San Jose is pretty safe...but quality of life matters too. You would know what I mean if you had homeless people camping across the street from you.

And it's never coming back, just watch old re-runs of CHiPs on TV and remember the good'ole days.

So the rumor about REH building a flagship store in SJ is true after all?

San Diego has weird city boundaries. Very safe suburban areas like Carmel Mountain Ranch, Scripps Ranch and Rancho Bernardo are in the "city of San Diego". If other cities included semi rural suburbs like Scripps Ranch within their boundaries they could lower their per capita crime rate too.
