I can see why a person would think QOL has gone down and crime has gone up in San Jose. Property crimes, specifically burglary and vehicle thefts, are at or near all time highs, both in absolute numbers, and per-capita. I'm not too worried about getting murdered, but in some areas, especially those that are nearly empty during the day (two working spouses and kids in school), burglaries are running rampant.

176 Burglaries in 90 Days: Residents of San Jose's Almaden Valley Neighborhood Say They're Under Attack | NBC Bay Area

Interestingly though, in many cases it's a single crew committing a large number of burglaries. That was the case for Almaden Valley. They had a ridiculous number of burglaries for several months (176 burglaries in 90 days), but the rate plummeted when a single crew was arrested. Same in the Blossom Hill area - the son of an unlicensed tree trimmer had been staking out and later burglarizing houses while his father worked the area, and once he (the son) was arrested, the number of burglaries plummeted.

Yes, it would be a problem but I would never live in an area where that would happen.

I imagine you don't live in San Diego. Those areas are not the least bit rural.

I used to live in San Diego and wish I still did. Even realtors trying to sell homes describe Scripps as semi-rural.

"the upscale, semirural StoneBridge Estates community in conjunction with Brookfield Homes."

"Adjacent to the community is the Sycamore Canyon Preserve with all its recreational amenities and is dedicated to natural open space preservation. Astoria provides a semi-rural setting, yet with all the rural charm, you are still close to shopping, restaurants, and parks. "

Scripps Ranch is even officially defined as semi-rural by the Sandiego.gov city planning dept.

Maintain and enhance the rural, forested character of the community."

To me Ramona is rural but I guess everybody has their own opinion. However this doesn't make San Diego unique. Many cities have areas like these.

Is this thread still about the Bay Area?

Last night there was a news report about the number of people who are selling their homes to move out of state for cheaper COL. The realtor being interviewed said her sellers were leaving for Oregon and Nevada.

There are other areas of California that are very nice and much cheaper than the Bay Area. I have lived in Oregon and spent a lot of time in Nevada. I have zero desire to live in either place.

Actually a number of high tech professionals are moving from the Bay Area to Portland, driving up our home prices. That fact that not everyone wants to move here is, frankly, a huge relief.

What parts of CA are your favorites? I don't mind Reno actually. I own some property there but I'd probably be bored if I lived there.

This response sounds a bit tone deaf. Never say never. I never had any significant problems for years where I live. Most of us just don't have the resources to quickly or easily pick up and move.
