Yup, it is a real area. And crazier thing is that the road is called Julian through its downtown stretch, then the name of the road is McKee Road through it's east side stretch.

It's a major east/west thoroughfare in San Jose that joins three freeways. It goes through downtown, then through the heavily Asian Berryessa district east of 680 into the foothills.

I agree with what others have said. It's not the greatest area, but probably not horrible either. "Ghetto" by San Jose standards is still pretty livable compared with most ghetto areas in other large cities. That said, I think you will probably want to move to a nicer area when your lease is up.

The OP was well over a year ago, so I suspect he's figured out the answer to his question by now

But it depends on which area of Julian is looking at, and what one is looking for.

For example: A buddy of mine rented a great old apartment(ca 1920s) down near 3rd and Julian for a few years up until 2005ish. The neighborhood was understandably "urban" and probably wouldn't have been attractive to a family for a variety of reasons. But for a single guy in his early 30s, it was great and had a lot of local interest.

If one is considering the area, I'd just suggest driving around and getting a feel for the area. Drop into some local businesses, restaurants, etc. Like a lot of urban areas, the look/feel of a neighborhood can vary dramatically within just a few blocks. So don't let one block define the whole community.
