Hello Everyone,

I am sorry if I am posting a resolved question. I looked into the forum using search option, couldn't find any answer.

So, here is my situation:

I bought a brand new vehicle today in TX from a Toyota dealer. They have applied for registration and provided a temporary license plate and a piece of paper mentioning that I own this vehicle. They mentioned that it could take 4-6 weeks to get the TX plates

I plan to drive from here to CA using this vehicle in 2 weeks. So, basically I will end up driving the vehicle with the temporary plates for at least 4 weeks in the interstates and in CA.

I was wondering if highway police or CA DMV will have any problem with this? I asked the Toyota representative in detail about this. He said I would be fine and it's completely legal. I just have to re-registrar the vehicle in CA paying the registration fee again.

He also mentioned that I even will not have to pay the Taxes in CA.

Please let me know if the Toyota Salesman is saying the absolute truth or if there are other issues that I should be aware of?

Thanks!

You'll pay the California taxes--around 8 1/2% depending on the county--minus the sales tax that you just paid in Texas, plus the first year California registration fees. You'll also need to turn in the Texas title and license plates, so you wouldn't be able to finalize the California transfer until you receive the title and plates from Texas.

you'll pay the CA tax differential if you bought the car less than (I think) 90 days prior to your move date.

You will have to pay quite significant amount of tax here once you establish residency in CA with TX license plate and a car < 12 months old. I moved from Austin with a new car and had to face this too.

And I found out that its not a good idea to buy a car in TX and move to CA if you know you will move to CA.

You may well get stopped by police on the interstate, so make sure you have all your paperwork in order.
