The bay area is not just the south bay down to san Francisco in the east bay you can still find a house in you price range. The commute is gonna be over an hour each way. My other issue is child care you are probably looking at over $1200 a month if you are both working. At 500k for a house you are looking at like $3400 a month mortgage piti add $1200 we are up to $4600. If you have student loans to pay car payments your eating away most of your take home pay and you might be house poor. I love the bay area and my town of Livermore but if I had to buy today I might have to consider another area of the country. We got lucky and bought at the bottom in 2011 for around $300k our house is worth about $550k now it's insane I don't know how long this upward momentum can continue.

You seem to have a pretty good handle on things if you are thinking Peninsula or South Bay.

Also, isn't the Triangle in NC better for biotech, and with a lower COL? I would think if you are willing to live in TN you would not mind NC (says the Californian who fears summers out there and crossed it off her husband's list, but has several friends who love that area and live there).

I make about 80k. Single income, supporting a stay at home partner who is handicapped. We have a nice 1-bedroom apartment in San Jose and have been here for over 5 years. The conditions are challenging - I have a full time job and a part time job, work 6-7 days out of every single week, and still have to find the time to run errands since he can't. Even though I have no life outside work, it is still difficult to save anything because the costs are so high. We have to use and invest our money wisely.
