I don't think this is always correct. It's analogous to saying we use more petrol to extract and refine oil than we actually get from the ground. This would be the definition of peak oil, where it becomes worthless. Clearly not the case. Still, I stand by my original statement that hydrogen fuel cells are pretty silly, and the interwebs are full of the merits of this debate.

It's true of energy carriers which are not also energy sources. If you're going to discuss alternative fuels you need to understand the difference between an energy source and an energy carrier, otherwise you're not going to be able to follow the discussion.

The question is which is the better energy carrier, hydrogen or a battery. You can make hydrogen through electrolysis using electricity, or use the same electricity to charge a battery. We've seen great advances in batteries in energy density (280 mile range of Tesla Model S) and power density (Tesla Model S smoking Hellcats at the drag strip). Fuel cell vehicles are now far behind when it comes to those two properties of an energy carrier. The only thing you can do better with a fuel cell vehicle right now is refuel it faster. A decade or two ago it may have seemed that fuel cell vehicles had a future, but that seems to be in doubt now.

if u wanna discuss about the energy carrier aand source, gota put a perimeter domain. will it be whole earth? or just country? or whole solar system? It all depends. if you setup perimeter around the earth then sun will certainly be a energy source of all (may be except some other x-ray nuke nrg from space).
