Fremont also has far better weather (not blistering hot like Pleasanton can get).

Fremont to Pleasanton would be a counter-commute.

Take a look into Fremont and see what you think.
I can't say I agree with this entirely.
Mission San Jose is a top high school no doubt, but to be in the area in Fremont to attend is going to be very pricey. There are parts of Fremont that just aren't all that great looking. On the other hand pretty much all the schools in Pleasanton are very good and Pleasanton has no bad areas. I talked with a few new homebuyers who said to be in Fremont where the schools are good was just not feasable so they chose Pleasanton.
Weather is subjective. While it can get hot the OP is coming from Fl so it will still seem like paradise weather wise. Along with the warm days come very nice evenings for outdoor activities whereas Fremont can get much colder in the evening.

I agree with this. Fremont is much bigger than Pleasanton and has everything from dumpy areas to neighborhoods with multi-million dollar homes. Pleasanton really has no rundown areas to speak of. I think all things comparable, Pleasanton homes generally cost less than equivalent Fremont homes. Mission San Jose in Fremont is $$$$$$.

I also prefer Pleasanton's warmer summer weather to Fremont's. Pleasanton also has a nice downtown area. The closest thing Fremont has to a downtown is in the Niles district, which is actually a pretty cool area, but small.

I forgot about the niles downtown. it is pretty neat, but I can't understand why more people don't hang out there-except for Charlie Chaplin days. I've been thru there multiple times at dinnertime and there's barely anyone around. Maybe it's the lack of eateries.
Downtown Pleasanton is quite vibrant, lots of people eating , walking and socializing. It seems to be a nice gathering spot for locals where they all run into friends and neighbors. Lot's of food options there. The friday night summer concert series is nice for families and easily walked to downtown before and after.
I think the OP would be wise to visit there on weekend evening and check it out.
