Thanks for all the answers, but it's moot now. They offered me 50-55k and I rejected it. I'm not going to live in a cardboard box, no matter how fun the job is.

It's just as well.

Honestly, despite what the others said, $70k plus unemployed girlfriend is a recipe for disaster here. Rents are only going in one direction: up.

$70K was more doable 3 or 4 years ago... nowadays it's just not worth it, so just as well like fluffy said.

I know lots of people in your situation and are doing fine over here. I think its when the kids start coming where things get a bit tricky! If your looking to rent you should be able to find something, seems like new condos are popping up everywhere these days. There are a lot of areas close to downtown San Jose that are brand new and are doing the whole mixed use buildings now.

Bear in mind...those base price rentals often do NOT have a washer/dryer in the unit. I was surprised by that. Your g/f might be surprised too. Cost of living in general is significantly higher than Philly area, and 70-75K is considered a low end salary for this area.

I moved from Blackwood New jersey to San Jose earlier this year. I went from $1200 a month for a 3 bedroom house to $2300 a month for an apartment. The neighborhoods in east bay are pretty damn suspect for the most part. Move to south bay or the peninsula.

I also went from a home paying $1400 / month to a small 1 bedroom apartment for $2400 / month. I feel like I lost a lot by giving up my house to rent a small apartment. However, I had to go where the jobs are... I guess it just takes some getting used to.
