Downtown San Jose is finally a true urban neighborhood. It has the residential towers, offices and hotels with lots of amenities. Light rail runs right through downtown. It's busy in the evenings these days.

It's even dirty and has crime. A true city.

Indeed OP! I love downtown San Jose! I was just there earlier today! I love the energy of Downtown SJ. I can't wait to move back there. I lived there for a year, I rented the bedroom in a 1 bedroom apartment and two SJSU students shared the living room. It was great. That's where things happen, man.

To be honest, I am seriously considering another residence somewhere in Downtown or as close to Downtown as possible. And you would never catch me saying that 4 years ago

It has come a long way. But there're still much longer way ahead. Much much longer.

Complete with panhandlers, abandoned lots, and tent cities on every other corner - impressive! :-D

Don't forget Fraternity Row, oodles of SJSU students, and older, occupied, dilapidated houses!

The north side neighborhood of SJSU is totally different from the south side in terms of housing, residents, and overall vibe. Probably because that's where most of the businesses and government offices are located.

One bonus for some, on average, is that the rent is cheaper than elsewhere, with the exception of East San Jose.

The actual downtown area was way more dirty, blighted and crime ridden 40 years ago. I can tell you are young. That must have been before your time.

A little bit of everything, plus entertainment, bars, highrises, etc. Not a bad place to live if you want all the actions close to you.

They finally cleaned up the tent city on my block...but I do agree that downtown still has issues. A short handed police force often means loud mouthed losers (and their boom boxes) and crazy people can do as they please. Encountering so many children in adult bodies can get you down after a while.
