Hey all!

On the 20th I'm flying back home to Hawaii after spending the holidays with family in Wisconsin, and I have a long layover in San Jose at the most inconvenient time. I land at 10:55pm, and fly out the next morning at 7:50. I know the timing is rough, but I've never been to California and wanted to try In-n-Out, along with just being able to say I've been there (Not that it really counts for much). Around midnight, is that area okay, or should I not leave? I don't want to pay for a taxi, so I would just plan to walk. I'm a male, but I'm on the small side (5'7", 130 pounds). Sorry if this sounds ignorant, I've really only lived in small towns and am not the most comfortable in big cities, especially those I haven't been to. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Jake

Hello Jake,
No I would not do this walk as the walk is just along desolate major street. I think it's safe but you will be walking all alone in the dark & cold along the perimeter of the airport.
In n out closes at 1am & according to google map it takes a 39 min walk to get there from the airport.

So if you're landing at close to 11pm, there's a good chance you're not out of the airport till 11:30pm. If you walk fast you'll get there just 50 mins before closing time. Then another 40 mins walk back.

I don't think an In n out burger is worth this effort at this time of day.

The advice above is good. It's not an unsafe neighborhood of San Jose, but it's very desolate and dark at night. Use a cab.

Thanks for the response. I felt like it may have been a touch ambitious. I'll probably be delirious anyways from two prior flights from Minneapolis and Seattle.

You could catch the Flyer bus (bus #10) which goes to Santa Clara Caltrain. It leaves terminal A at 11:20pm and stops in front of the Earthquakes stadium (which is where the In N Out is) at 11:26pm. Problem is there is no bus going back to the airport after that hour until 5am. So you'd have to take an uber back to the airport.

The biggest risk is being hit by a car, this road has no sidewalks, it's not meant for pedestrians. I've never seen anyone walking on it. Take Uber

Definitely take an Uber or Lyft to InandOut Burger and back. Fast/Easy..... A cab is much more expensive. BTW, I actually think their fries are better than the burger itself..

Ditto all that. It's not necessarily a dangerous area, but dark, deserted and you are talking about the middle of the night. Take an Uber.
