Well, it pays to also get the skinny on the culture of these companies - they vary in that intensity. Tesla is pretty well known for insane hours - it mirrors Musk's workaholic zest - and sadly it's also manifested in some issues with workplace accidents too. Work/life balance can also vary by department or function within a company. If you're in supply chain @ Apple, expect a lot of travel to China and late night conference calls.

I don't think it's just an issue for older workers either.

If by older you mean, young (or not quite young) married with kids, I can see your point.

But once kids are out of the house and / or cases of child free and / or single, that is definitely not true.

In fact, the opposite is often true.

Without the many distractions of youngish adulthood, the older worker is often the one who can be found online when younger ones are too busy making dinner for or helping out with homework of the kiddies. And not having to be up at a specific time getting young ones ready for school, the older worker is often the one burning the midnight oil or on a call with India in the middle of the night.

The problem with your logic is that even with the H1B abuses you refer to, there is still greater demand for than supply of tech workers. Plenty of people think tech workers are overpaid. Removing H1B workers only means citizen/resident workers will make even more.

As to your original response to grad_student200, I still don't see how training to learn the latest and greatest tech will become any easier when H1B abuses are cracked down on. If the guy doesn't know (insert latest programming language here), he's not going to get hired for such a role. Maybe I'm wrong though, maybe companies would begin hiring and training on the job, but that doesn't strike me as the most efficient way to run a business when there are plenty of people who know said language and just need a visa in order to share these skills with American employers.
