Hi guys! I'm graduating soon and I'm looking at a job in Mountain View that doesn't pay much over an entry level salary. Assuming I'd get the job, I'm looking for an area that's fun for young adults (I'll be 20, turning 21 soon), is safe and has relatively affordable rent. I'm ok with sharing an apartment, but I would like to spend $1000 for a room and preferably have one-two roommates.

Could you tell me about
- San Jose
- Fremont
- San Mateo
- Palo Alto
- Any other nearby city

Would SF be too far to live? I know it's crazy expensive but it's always ranked as a top place to live for recent graduates and has more of an appeal than San Jose for me. My eventual goal is to move to LA to pursue screenwriting, so what's the difference between Northern and SoCal and what one do you prefer more? Also I'm coming from Florida, so do you think it'd be better to drive 40 hours or fly and get my car shipped? How much should I have saved? Is it at all possible to move with not much?

Sorry for all the questions!

What will be your salary/total compensation?

$1000 for a room is not easy to find even in San Jose...........

None of those places are in Mountain View.

- San Jose is not Mountain View
- Fremont is not Mountain View
- San Mateo is not Mountain View
- Palo Alto is not Mountain View
- Any other nearby city (except Mountain View) is not Mountain View

Most of those places are not "an area that's fun for young adults" either, except for MV downtown, PA downtown / close to Stanford. Good luck finding a place for $1000 per month.

Also you should sell your car and re-buy in CA. It's not worth the DMV headache to bring in your non-CA car. Since everyone here drives Porches and Teslas, you can find low-end cars like BMWs for half price or less.

MV downtown + PA downtown x 10 = SJ Downtown

OP, I would suggest you rent as close as possible to your workplace. Trust us, the happiest person in the Bay Area is not the person who lives closest to some "happening" place, but is the person who lives the closest to their workplace.

10x the bars, 10x the restaurants, 10x the entertainment. Drug addicts are everywhere. Misery? From what? We got 10x the bars, how can you be miserable?

Smog/traffic? Yes, of course, when you 10x the entertainment, you're going to have 10x the traffic. It's a good problem to have

Too many drunken losers and lushes! The only bars I am interested are loaded with heavy weight at Golds Gym in Mountain View.

Sf to Mountain View is about 40 miles with heavy traffic. Its much too far unless one is on one of the Google Mega buses.

Have your new company ship the car as part of the relocation package. If they won't do that its probably not a type of job worth moving cross country for.

If your goal is screen writing in Los Angeles, it would probably make more sense to move to the Los Angeles metro and pursue some internships in that industry.

Exactly. Get in there and make contacts locally. Why would you want to come up to Silicon Valley for that unless you're going into tech?
