I'd add the zip code 95116 to that list of bad zip codes.

Some very, very nice homes and subdivisions built close to the foothills. If you are going to work in South SJ, you can find beautiful housing in the area. IBM/Hitachi is in the process of tearing down to make room for more housing. Me...I'm moving to Texas. I love San Jose, but looking for simpler times and losing the rat race. Best to you.

I live and grew up in the area just west of Monterey at the Monterey-Branham intersection. Everything West of Monterey in south San Jose is great, usually the farther West you go, the better. However, the second you cross Monterey Rd., things change dramatically. I went to school on that side of Monterey and let me tell you that the educational system there pales in comparison to schools in the Almaden-Blossom Hill area. So like I said, if you are thinking of south San Jose, stay west of monterey unless you go up into the hills in areas like evergreen which are really nice.

I will be relocating from my job at the Postal Service in Maine to the Postal Distribution Facility located in San Jose. Can anyone advise of a good area to live in? I'm looking for a middle class area with diversity since my wife and I are an interracial couple. I've read a lot of commentary on the forum and have been using city-data.com to review some of the areas. We were recently out there in August but to be honest the spaciousness overwhelmed us and we were not sure of the areas. Needless to say we got lost a couple of times. Any ideas will be accepted.

That's the facility on Hostetter, right? If so, it's in the Berryessa district of San Jose. It's a nice area with a fairly high percentage of Asians living in it. The traffic is awful coming from the east in the morning, so you might want to consider living west or northwest of the facility.

If by diversity you mean asian, indian sub continent, or mexican, than yea there is plenty of that in san jose. But san jose is not exactly known for its diversity or abundance of affordable middle class areas to own homes. There are plenty of rental options how ever.
