But fortunately I work remotely more often than not.

I leave west livermore at 8 am and am usually at the intersection of university and high streets in Palo Alto by 9:20 or so.

If you leave at 3:30 in the afternoon you can expect to be about the same time heading home. I take the dumbarton bridge, not 237 or the san mateo bridge.

I pretty much avoid 580 at all costs both coming and going. If you want to know the exact route just let me know and I'll try to link to google maps.

For a new family coming in on a budget, I'd forget about the american dream big house, big yard and go for a really nice condo in a really nice neighborhood with good schools so that you can keep your commute time low. I'd look in more of the fremont / newark area that would put you within 20-30 minutes drive of downtown palo alto.

Unless both parents are working in high paying jobs it's pretty tough to live the dream here in the bay area.

Newark is fine, most of Hayward is OK but I would recommend checking out the neighborhood first. Further east, the better (though it lengthens your commute).
