My husband is considering taking a job for GE in San Jose. We have 2 high school students and currently live in Atlanta area. We have lived in Connecticut and understand the high cost of living and commuting (NYC).
What areas are best as far as commute and family life with good schools?

East Bay to San Jose will be a long commute. You may want to consider Campbell instead.

Good luck!

I think if you want good schools you should consider Cupertino, mostly a short commute to San Jose. I imagine you could get a 5 bd house for about $3M. Granted you never told me your budget, but 2 working adults without anything else I would imagine $1M being a more realistic budget?

I don't have personal experience with their schools. But the people I know who live there like it, seems to be a nice town for families.

GE Digital is based in San Ramon, very close to Pleasanton. Check with your husband if he needs to go there. Pleasanton has great schools.

Definitely would not even considering doing it unless the choice is between no job in Atlanta and a high paying job in San Jose. The cost of housing here is much higher than the expensive NYC suburbs.

Very small houses begin at one million in decent commute areas like these examples.

Campbell High is ok with a 7/10 API.

Westmont High in Campbell , CA - ranking, school information, ratings, test scores, test results

If you want an area with excellent 10/10 rated schools plan on spending 1.7 million or more for a small house.

Those are the cheaper areas. An expensive area with elite schools has stratospheric prices like this 5.9 million dollar 2,300 sq. ft. house in Palo Alto.

Some of the best schools and family life are in the East Bay suburbs of Pleasanton, San Ramon and Danville. All these areas are horrible commutes to San Jose.

Buy or rent? Detached house? How many bedrooms? Budget?

Anyway, I agree with a comment to NOT go to East Bay (horrible commute). Fremont as a maximum north from SJ. Please answer other questions and we can recommend more detailed towns or neighborhoods in or near San Jose.

Pleasanton - no way. Good schools, good newer houses (not much cheaper than in the Valley actually), low crime, but commute... no just no especially if you plan renting not buying. And weather is worse comparing in the Valley with more continental climate.

GE doesn't strike me as the type of company that pays enough to make the move worth it. Is your husband going to be making at least $300k base salary?

General Electric in San Jose? Which unit? The Nuclear unit used to be where the Foundry shopping center (on Curtner) but they had moved to Wilmington, NC over 15 years ago.
