East MP = East of 101, avoid that area. There is the headquarters of a certain $500 billion tech company in East MP, I thought you might be working there. The Willows isn't the best neighborhood either, but you're not likely to get stabbed there. The neighborhoods closer to downtown MP and Stanford are nicer.

BTW everyone here says "El Camino", not "82".

If work is in Facebook, you can consider renting right near Facebook in North East Menlo Park - their newer apartment buildings right near the campus should be safe, and you can walk or bike to work. I assume the majority of people who rent there are Facebook workers. But I would rent near Menlo Park downtown with your budget... More fun and safety.

Got it thanks. And yep, that's the certain big company.

RE: "El Camino"....my Bay-Area-newbness is showing.

Never in my life have I seen the extreme gradient of power and wealth that the 101 fwy divides between PA proper and East PA. You could walk to a 3rd world country from Steve Job's house in 15 mins! Only maybe the barrios of Rio could be like that. Besides the obvious threat to ones own safety, if you happen to lose your way, its just this shocking "in your face" truth of the extremes between top and bottom in American society today.

I think the vast majority of techie types on the W side of the fwy, wandering the upscale shops and celeb watching at Starbucks, without the vaguest idea what lies just a mile to the east.

False, Steve lived at Waverley & Santa Rita. That's a 2.3 mile walk to Pulgas & E. Bayshore, which is basically the closest point in EPA. So you'd need to run a 6.5 minute mile for 2.3 miles, while running across Middlefield, E. Bayshore, and some other streets in order to get from Steve's house to EPA in 15 minutes. Not exactly a leisurely walk.

I like Redwood City for a commute to Menlo Park.
