Downtown Palo Alto seems to be more busy with foot traffic during the day time. Of course at night time on weekends SJ is much more busy.

It is definetly more varied and interesting than SJ overall. Parts of SJ are really cool as well, like the downtown area, SJ College and the Tapestry Arts Festival over Labor Day Weekend is fun, but this person is looking for culture and networking. I think there is more going on in the cities I stated earlier. as well as SJ and SF. Don't you think that SF would overwhelm a newcomer if they are just starting out? And wouldn't it be better to move closer to visit SF and see if it is the right choice later? And wouldn't it also be better to be in a smaller community in between instead of in SJ population almost 1 million? Japantown and Alameda W of HP is a bit of a stretch, isn't it? If you live in SJ, I didn't mean to offend you....I like SJ...I was trying to give this newcomer a comfortable situation.

I would recommend the peninsula for living close to SF without being in it. That's not what I disputed, though. I meant that there are many little, old Main Streets in SJ neighborhoods that you'd find on the peninsula. They're similar in that sense, not as different as you made them sound.

Sorry, I meant to say that there is more foot traffic in DT Palo Alto during the day time than in DT SJ.

I'm not sure why this would matter. Do you not work and want to associate with other people who are also not working?

What do you mean? Downtown SF also has more foot traffic than Downtown SJ, and that is because a ton of people work there.

It's also because it's a major tourist destination, the site of a major state building, and home to thousands of homeless people. Call me crazy, but I don't call that kind of transient traffic a positive.

I'm talking about Downtown. In the mornings you see a ton of people walking to work, getting there coffee fixes or breakfast before going into work. People chatting in front of their building before work. You see a crap ton of people out at lunch time too. I'm talking about actually workers and downtown, not union square and mess. I lived like 2 blocks south of downtown one summer so I've seen it.

When did this turn from peninsula to San Francisco? Obviously SF has more foot traffic, for many of the reasons you both gave.
